June Grapevine Selections:
White Wine Selection - 2006 Evans & Tate Chardonnay - Margaret River, Australia
The Margaret River growing area is in south-western Australia. Surrounding the winery is a vineyard called Jindong inside of the Margaret River. The sumptuous grapes were grown in this premium chunk of Aussie earth. Chardonnay is the queen-bee varietal planted in this maritime climate. The fruit of the grape is maximized and managed into refined wines with a heck of a lot of finesse. This internationally recognized property consistently produces premium Chardonnay wines. Evans & Tate is one of them.
Sight: Pale straw with a smidgeon of green color.
Nose: Peaches, nectarine, cashews, spice.
Taste: freshness in a bottle, tight in structure, stone-fruit flavors like lemon dominate as a subtle sweet spice creates a balanced body.
Fifty percent of the juice fermented in new French oak, and the other half spent about seven months in the womb of French oak barriques. Sync this Chardonnay with fish and chips, white fishes and meats.
Red Wine Selection - 2005 Merum Monastrell - Jumilla, Spain
Monastrell is a Mediterranean grape. When I first met its’ acquaintance, I was seduced by the intensity of it. The wine is saturated with black cherries and forest floor earth. This grape flourishes in Jumilla’s dry, hot summer weather and mild winters. Jumilla gets as little as ten inches of rainfall a year. The Limestone soil that it grows in retains the scarce humidity and produces a deep and concentrated personality. If you are unfamiliar with this grape, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to it. This bottle contains 85% Monastrell, 10% Syrah and 5% of the indigenous Spanish grape, Tempranillo.
Juan Jimenez, the winemaker crafts his wines in this sixty plus year old winery. Not much of this wine is produced. The Wine Advocate rates this vintage 90 points. A lot of value here. Sync with herbed mushrooms, grilled red meats, and a fresh cut chunk of Maytag cheese.
Alternate Red Wine Selection - 2006 Peachy Canyon Incredible Red - Paso Robles, California
Peachy Canyon is a Zinfandel House. They plant little else in this Paso Robles winery that was established in 1982. Winemaker Josh Beckett crafts balanced, concentrated Zins. Incredible Red is a little laid back as far as other Zins go. I like that. Not all Zins have to hit me over the head to get my attention. This is a substantial little table wine. Typical bright and shining fruit sparkles through it. Mild acid and an elegant finish make it a foodie’s dream come true. Friendly enough to sync with a myriad of food flavors. |
